As a specialty, try barnacles, a crustacean boiled in seawater. Dairy products are very tasty because cows graze outdoors, and the grass is always green and fresh. A traditional appetizer is red pepper paste served with local cheese or cheese fondue. The island’s dessert is a kind of muffin called Queijadas de Vila Franca do Campo.
